Challenging myself - J

I am submitting at least one comment at the blog  - http://rachaelharrie.blogspot.com/2012/04/to-z-blogging-challenge-rachs-writing.html for a very creative contest there.

Rachael has a picture and she is inviting posts based on the picture each day.
So, here’s my entry for the 'J' day and the rules for the entry were - Wednesday April 11 - Include three words starting with the letter 'J' in your entry

Juggling life, Juggling life,
Am I being a real good wife?
In a relation, there will be strife,
Show me ways to get back on stride.

Jolly life, Jolly life
Its a boon being a housewife.
I am there for my son, all the time,
Enjoying Moterhood while his innocence chimes.

Jealous life, Jealous life,
Jealous of all those women whose career flies.
I'll find my knack and have it crack,
I'll have my career too, back on track.

Juggling life, Jugggling life,
Too many things come rippling by.

Family and Friends are oyster pearls,
Value their treasures and keep them deep.
Everything else are just those waves,
If you miss one, you'll have another to sweep.

Challenging myself - I

Lately, I have been Blog Hopping on some of the posts at the A to Z blog contests happening at - http://www.a-to-zchallenge.com/

I came across this blog - http://rachaelharrie.blogspot.com/2012/04/to-z-blogging-challenge-rachs-writing.html and a very creative post there.

Rachael has a picture and she is inviting posts based on the picture each day.

Well, the thing that struck me most was that picture. It is an awesome picture. To be able to write something based on that picture each day, following those little criteria that she has set, seemed like a challenge, waiting just for me!!

Having a contest as unique as this, within another contest, is an amazing way to increase the number of page views on your blog without any blog posts.

So, here’s my entry for the I day and the rules for the entry were - Tuesday April 10 -  Base your entry around the letter "I"
I come here often...

I see the hopes, the uncertainties and the dreams on the horizons of future, ahead of me.

I see the lessons, the mistakes and the regrets of my past, on those reflections behind me.

I sit and wonder of all the power of today that I carry within me.

I come here alone but I always find a friend within me.

I come here with bags of burden and I always find space to empty it out.

I come here feeling empty and I always fill it up with ever more pleasant things to carry back and give away.

I come here with joy and I always find peace and contentment to go with it.

I come here often.

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly about Pen names

If you are doing what the whole wide world is doing, what are you doing? Isn’t it an adventure to walk the less treaded path? Isn’t it fun, joy and excitement to do the same thing,  a little more differently than how everyone is doing?

What happens when you put out all about yourself?

The Good – You get to be famous the instant your book gets published. You get to go for book-signing events, library/ school events - promoting your works, increasing their sales, public speaking and teaching youngsters and amateurs in the field.

The Bad - You are just another Anna/ Bob/ Cathy/ David in the directory. People read about you behind the back of the books and they are done with you.

The Ugly – Obviously, it needs to be ugly. Even a happy birthday message posted on your wall is a step closer to identity thefts. How easy is it to get a call from, say the USCIS or the FTB, with a lot of details about you, asking you to confirm your mother’s maiden name or the last 4 digits of your SSN?

What happens when you don’t?

The Good - If you are lucky, (mind it - the harder you work, the luckier you get) you WILL get noticed for all the reasons that you are hiding away from. An element of anonymity makes people want to know more about you. They will collect tid-bits about you, your style of writing and connect the dots. It’s like the little treasure hunt, only more so, it’s an identity hunt here.     Fame comes late, but, it would definitely be worth the wait if it clicks!

The Bad – How can you promote your works? How do you contribute to its sales if you can’t even sell it among your friends? May be, you will have to hire people to work for you, or you have to go there under a false identity to work for yourself.

The Ugly – The fox that couldn’t reach the grapes named it sour. If you are a hard nut to crack, then forget it. The ocean out there has a lot more fishes for my net.

My whole intention of this blog is to discover and nurture the inner author in me. It is like – there is a little girl within me, (my alter ego) and I want to treat her like my daughter, encourage her and see her grow, watch her taking on the world and spinning it on her fingers.

So, If you want to know the real me... then read all that I write. I can’t stop myself from flowing on what I write. Pick it up and piece them together.  You will discover me :)

Understanding pen names

What's in a name? that which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet; - Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet

What is a pen name?

Pen names, Nom de Plume, Literary doubles are pseudonyms adopted by authors. (courtesy - wiki)

Why are they used?

1.    To hide a gender/race.
·   Women have used masculine pen names in the earlier centuries. Mary Ann Evans wrote under the name George Eliot
·   Women who write about men/boys as their main characters. Joanne Rowling wrote with an initialized unisex pen name J. K. Rowling. Ian Fleming used a female pen name Vivienne Michel for his James Bond novel.

2.    To distance one-self from the notorieties associated with their actual names or to recover one’s reputation, if it has gone bad previously due to lower sales.
·   Science fiction author Harry Turtledove wrote as H.N. Turtletaub for his historical novels because he and his publisher felt that the presumed lower sales of those novels might hurt book sales of his science fiction novels that he writes under his own name.

3.    Say, your real name is really complex to appear on a book cover.
·   Lucila de MarĂa del Perpetuo Socorro Godoy Alcayaga, Nobel Prize winner in Literature wrote as Gabriela Mistral.

4.     Authors who write in multiple genres use multiple pen names.
·   Lewis Carroll is the pseudonym of the English writer and mathematician Charles Lutwidge Dodgson. Carroll invented his pen name by translating his first two names into the Latin "Carolus Lodovicus" and then anglicizing it into "Lewis Carroll."
·    Nora Roberts used J. D. Robb, when she ventured writing detective fiction apart from romance novels.

5.    Authors writing very sensitive articles, exposing crime/espionages that are bound to get explicit attention in all forms, use a pen-name.
·   Vladimir “Volodya” Ilyich Ulyanov, chose “Lenin” as a pen name for all his revolutionary communist literary works in his life.
·   Former SAS soldier, used the pseudonym Andy McNab for his book about a failed SAS mission titled Bravo Two Zero.

6.     Your name is same/similar to another popular figure out there already.
·   Oh, what a joy would It be to google your pen name and find that it fills up the entire first page of results? It is definitely needed if your name is John Smith or William Jones.

What are the advantages of using a pen name?

People often get very curious when you hide little things and certainly when you decide to hide your identity, you do stand a great chance of lingering on in their minds for a longer time.

You do ultimately tend to get exposed/discovered - when people do pick up occasional tid bits about you and garland it all together, all leading to a sudden outburst of popularity.

What are the disadvantages of using a pen name?

If your sole intention of writing under a pen name was to safeguard your identity, how will you ever publicize it or promote it among your network of friends and family?

With the social networking arena exploding by the day, you are judged by the number of friends/fans/followers you have. If you are a newbie writer, then publishers will definitely look out for your popularity before accepting to publish. And, by using a pseudonym, you will be masking all that you have built so far.

Final note –

Ultimately, getting noticed, more for your works rather than for who you are or where you are from, is a thrill that every author craves for, no matter whether re he chooses to use his real name or a pseudonym.

Pen name or no pen name, All the best with your writing J

LEARNING. I wanted to create a collage of the famous authors having pen names. And, yet again, I was pulled off my track - to learn working with an image editing tool. I chose GIMP. Notice how novice my collage is. I really did not have the patience to read through and explore all options before I come up with a great collage. But, yes – nothing better than a youtube video a day to improve my skills. So, for now, please bear with my current image. I promise, you will see me learning through this J

Blog Etiquette

Blog etiquette
View more PowerPoint from nemoms

Isn't it too early to post a blog etiquette? What experience have I got in blogging?

Well, I have read a lot of blogs and hundreds of posts till now, that I know what a good blog is and what is not. Adding a few of my own principles to what I have understood about blogging till now, – I made my 'Golden Rules of Blogging' to blog by.

Read through and let me know what you think about them!

I used slideshare.net to upload my presentation and get a code to embed here on my blog. I loved its ease of use and the final look and feel of my presentation.

However, I have one thing to crib about – I had animated my presentation but lost all the animations on my slides after publishing/embedding it on the blog. I did try and get a work around or a solution for this but couldn’t seem to find it at all.

I have posted a query and am waiting for a response for the same. Will update you what I find out!!

Taking on a different track

I started this blog with the sole intention of learning the art of writing. Just 2 posts into it and I seemed to hate to read what I have written. Not that the content was soo bad :D, it was just the way it was presented.

Something like - The world's best coffee, served in a cup that’s cracked or chipped, will definitely impact your tastebuds after you have laid your eyes on them.

The easiest part is writing, but, presenting it out well takes the 95% of the work.

I did not like how my blog looked. It did not make me linger around long enough or set a mood while I read what I wrote. It did not even make me come back to re-read it.

So, here I am - set out to present it on the best platter. :)
  1. Reading books and ebooks on blogging and custom/professional blogging .
  2. Planning out a calendar of events on my future posts about what all I am learning. You will see posts/vlogs upcoming on this, pretty soon.
And yes, learning the art of writing follows parallel with all this.

Facebook/ Blogs/ Twitter/ Vlogs

Practically, Everyone is on Facebook. Almost everyone is blogging and tweeting, and many do have the patience to shoot videos, edit and vlog it.

The question is who is reading/ seeing all these? Everyone is busy doing it themselves.
  1. To be very hopeful, let’s say 3/4th of the people that I invite, would actually subscribe to all that I ever post and read every one of it diligently.
  2.  Most often, I click on the next blog just to be surprised. If I am on Youtube, I do look at its other suggestions. I am not on Facebook or Twitter and I thank god for not idling away more of my time on them.

So, I do stumble upon and read other blogs/vlogs. But, rarely have I remembered them and followed them, no matter how much pleased I was with them.

How do you get 'people' to read your posts? By ‘people’, I mean - People whom you don't know and people who would start liking you for your works.

If you are writing just about yourself/your family or about the other such general things in life, giving them your views and opinions on it, it might hardly interest people. Everyone has an opinion and everyone wants to talk. So, your posts will least likely be talked about.

Write about something that people want to read, something that interests them.
  • How-to articles
  • Product review articles.
  • Travel logs in detail. What did u do and what should you have rather done?
  • Promoting something nice that you came upon. (Free stuff, Sale events, Tricks and Tips to fool a system, etc…)
  • News. Brainstorms about a particular issue, your predictions of its impact and after-postings of them dissecting your predictions.
  • Funny pictures/ jokes/ articles

Well, most importantly – I asked myself a question - what would I love to read? My list would vary from yours. But, as I always believe, there are a whole lot of people in this world who are a lot like me. So, write for yourself and you are sure to find someone who loves what you are doing solely for the reason that, that is what they are doing too or that is what they wish to do.

And also, it all depends on the purpose of your posts. If your whole intention was to just keep in touch with your friends and family, then, I thank you for reading this through but I am sorry it does go beyond your objectives.

And what will I do with all my posts?

I guess I will write about reading, writing and blogging for the moment.
